  Operations Insights:

O&M spending for plant performance improvements continue as capital spending is curtailed

While capital budgets are constrained, plant O&M budgets continue to finance daily operations with emphasis on energy efficiency and production optimization.  As product demand and rig counts fall, the resulting turn-down at many gas processing plants calls for control loop re-tuning and operator re-training to handle reduced rates while maintaining product quality and minimizing product giveaway.  BDP Inc. provides consulting services to audit existing control strategies, to evaluate current plant performance, to tune complex loops, to re-train operators on loop interactions and process constraints, and to recommend control strategy enhancements that improve product recoveries and reduce energy consumption.  Cost effective designs automatically control within known constraints and provide rapid response to process upsets, which reduces callouts and reduces wear and tear on process equipment caused by frequent trips and restarts.

Recent BDP Inc. projects have identified target benefits such as the processing opportunities listed below.

<> Cryogenic gas plant strategies that increase recoveries, coordinate parallel train processing, and maintain tighter product specifications based on real-time process demand.

<> Refrigeration load management strategies that respond to disturbances in the plant inlet rate and disturbances in the refrigeration system, acting rapidly to prevent carryover while always returning the chiller to efficient operation once the disturbance has been rejected.

<> Hot Oil systems incorporating multiple Waste Heat Recovery Units in parallel with large fired heaters have been optimized to automatically drive the Hot Oil system toward maximum utilization of waste heat capacity and reduced fuel consumption by the fired heaters.

<> APC solutions for NGL Fractionation facilities that reduce the variation in product quality and provide optimization strategies that drive product targets toward more profitable operations.

In today’s competitive market, implementing reliable Advanced Regulatory Control (ARC) strategies directly on the installed control system can deliver sustained benefits while minimizing long-term costs for strategy maintenance and usually without additional control hardware and software purchases.  BDP advanced control designs and model-predictive composition controls have performed extremely well to improve product yields and to reduce operator workload while delivering tighter performance specs with automatic response to load changes and process upsets.

BDP Inc. offers process control consulting, advanced control strategy design and implementation, and system integration services to deliver overall control system performance enhancements.  Contact BDP Inc. for more information on similar control system services and process control improvements to enhance your plant operations today.
