FEED Study defines control system upgrade scope and facilitates system selection

The BDP Inc. team is participating in several front-end studies to develop scopes, budgets, and execution strategies to upgrade process control and safety systems at multiple sites.  These front-end engineering design (FEED) studies are typically performed as a team effort between BDP Inc. and the client’s technical staff.  The BDP resources supplement the client’s staff, but the BDP team also provides technical expertise across various control system platforms.  The services involved in a FEED study may be limited to control system selection & design to upgrade a legacy electronic system, or sometimes these services also include instrument selection and field installation designs to upgrade local control loops.

In some cases, our clients incorporate system selection as an integral part of the FEED study.  BDP Inc., acting as owner’s engineer, can provide Vendor coordination to solicit budgetary estimates, to compile technical comparisons between systems, and to arrange product demonstrations for client representatives.  These system evaluation activities enable the client to select a preferred system and define the system architecture as an integral part of the FEED study.

The results of a FEED study typically provide a preliminary design package suitable for competitive bids, plus an AFE quality budget for client evaluations.   The technical design package is combined with the client’s commercial package to issue bids for detailed design and project execution.  The bidders list may include qualified engineering contractors, system integrators, and control system Vendors offering services suited to the overall installation scope.  The resulting bid evaluation and contract award establishes a baseline for scope change management and confirms responsibilities for all project participants.

The BDP team is currently providing process control consulting, advanced control strategy design & commissioning, control system troubleshooting and audits, and control system configuration for plant upgrades and for new plant construction.  Contact
