  Operations Insights:

Safety logic audit and validation services

Procedures and policies are becoming more rigorous to manage safety logic processors in PSM facilities, but many of our clients are finding justification to audit and validate their safety logic on a periodic basis.  A change of ownership can initiate a need for safety logic validation.  Often the safety documents for OEM packages or legacy plant systems are unavailable or unclear.  When the available safety documents seem out-of-sync with current PSM reviews, the plant operators call on BDP Inc. to audit and validate their existing safety logic systems.

The BDP team is currently involved in several projects that include safety logic audit and validation services.  These services include a review of the existing safety logic programs and a comparison with available plant documents, such as P&IDs, Cause & Effect matrix, and operating procedures when necessary.  The BDP safety logic audit identifies all safety related ‘effects’ that represent an output or action by the safety logic processor.  The BDP review then verifies all process and instrumentation inputs or ‘causes’ that initiate safety actions, to develop an ‘as found’ Cause & Effect matrix.  The ‘as found’ Cause & Effect matrix represents the actual logic in the safety processor, and when compared to the PSM approved documents, the comparison will either validate the safety actions or identify discrepancies between actual logic and approved safety actions.  The BDP Inc. deliverables include a set of project documents that provide an audit trail for the validation process, and provide a basis for future Change Management.  Any discrepancies identified during the safety audit must be resolved by plant operations as part of the PSM process.

BDP Inc. offers process control consulting, advanced control strategy design and implementation, and system integration services to deliver overall control system performance enhancements.  Contact BDP Inc. for more information on similar control system services and process control improvements to enhance your plant operations today.
