Compressor Station Control and Safety System

BDP Inc. has completed a front-end study to develop a scope and design basis for integration of three compressor stations in western Colorado.  The three stations provide inlet compression for a central gas treating facility.  The stations include individual unit controllers supplied with each compressor, and also include a BDP Inc. supplied station control panel that consists of separate logic processors for process control and safety interlocks.  The three compressor stations are expected to be unmanned, and will instead be operated remotely from the central gas treating facility.  The compressor station control systems will be linked to the central treating facility using a secure wireless Ethernet network.  The chosen architecture provides both engineer and operator functions at the central treating facility to support the common control systems at all four sites, which reduces overall staffing and still improves response time for process upsets and control system troubleshooting.

Currently, the control system configuration and panel assembly is underway in Houston and Denver.  BDP Inc. is working closely with the control system vendor to design, assemble, program, and test the three station control panels prior to shipment for installation by others.  The process controller for each station includes a combination of Foundation Fieldbus instrument and valve controllers, DeviceNet motor controls, and traditional hard-wired loops, to control yard valves, gas dehydration, and pressure profiles at the station.  The process controller also includes serial interfaces to connect to the individual unit controllers, to packaged burner management systems, and to station flow meters.  A separate logic processor is included to segregate critical shutdown functions from the process controller.  The safety controller uses only traditional hard-wired devices to monitor safety interlocks and to execute a safe shutdown of the station.  The station control panel design includes redundancy for controllers, power supplies, and Ethernet communications to minimize potential control system downtime.  Each compressor station also includes a single engineer/operator workstation that will be used for initial station start up, and for local operation and maintenance.

BDP Inc. is consulting on several projects with operating companies and engineering contractors to best utilize wireless systems, Fieldbus instruments, and motor automation networks to reduce installation and commissioning costs and to enable remote operation centers.  Contact BDP Inc. for more information on similar control system services and process control improvements to enhance your plant operations today.
